Park Hill, Park Hill South top PH Invite results

Park Hill and Park Hill South both finished in the top four of the Park Hill Swim Invitational last weekend. Park Hill South finished in second place with 265 points behind Notre Dame de Sion while Park Hill took fourth place with 181 points, just four points behind third place finisher St. Theresa’s. It sets the stage for what could be a close conference swim meet between the two rivals at the beginning of February.

Park Hill South coach Tim Busenhart says his team has performed better than expected so far in the first part of the season with the help of two talented freshman. Anna Riekhof, who took first in the 100 yard breast stroke at the invitational, currently has the best time in the state. Tori Buehler, who did not participate in last weekend’s competition, is recording times that put her as one of the top three statewide in the backstroke and individual medley.

“The girls swam pretty well this weekend. Most of them moved up or stayed where they were before. It’s going a lot better than I thought it might. We graduated 11 seniors last year, but the freshmen have really stepped up,” Busenhart said. “Right now we have the top medley relay and breast stroke in the state. There are three other girls who are in the top five in their individual events as well.”

Also racking up points for Park Hill South last weekend was a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay from Samantha Scott, Helen Yeater, Riekhof, and Olivia McLean. Yeater clocked in second in the 100 yard butterfly. The Panthers will next look to the Raytown Invitational next weekend, which they have won 10 years in a row, and hope to bring home an 11th this year.

Across the pool, Park Hill is encouraged by their fourth place finish and starting to get their feet back underneath them after winter break. Coach Karl Haley says they did not have any divers competing this weekend, but it could have made a difference since the Trojans fell short of third place by only four points. Top finishers for Park Hill included Lauren Shaw who took first in the 100 yard freestyle and second in the 100 yard backstroke along with the second place finish from the 200 yard free relay team of Madison Heydinger, Olivia Woods, Rebecca Shaw, and Lauren.

Things are looking up though as they head down the season stretch.

“We’ve got all of our relays already qualified for state, which is a nice accomplishment this early in the season,” Haley said.

Senior Lauren Shaw has helped anchor some of those relays. Shaw transferred this year from Warrensburg where she was a state finalist in several events last season. Having already qualified for state in the 100 and 300 backstroke, Shaw’s ability has landed her an opportunity to continue swimming after high school.

“She’s an important part of our relays and has qualified individually in the 100 and 300 backstroke so far,” Haley said. “She’s an upper echelon swimmer that has signed with Bringham Young University (BYU) as a division one swimmer next year.

Heydinger has also qualified for state again, as part of several relays with her teammates and in the 500 freestyle. Haley says there have been big contributions from Hill, Rebecca Shaw, and Woods.

With only a few meets left in the season, Park Hill will compete in the KC Classic next weekend, which will serve as a pre-cursor to the conference meet. Haley says compared to the Park Hill Invitational, the conference meet will feature fewer teams and could provide for a close finish.

“There were 20 some odd teams vying for points, but at conference there are only six teams, so the points won’t be so spread out,” Haley said. “If we can get some divers to meet the format at the varsity level, it could be make things a lot closer than they have been in a while.”

Winter Preview: Park Hill Girls Swimming

Coming off a 2011-2012 season where the Trojans overcame the odds to earn a share of the conference title with long-time champion Lee’s Summit West, they return this season with several members to build another competitor around. Madison Heydinger, a 200 and 500 freestyle state qualifier last year, returns with second place conference medal winners Lynn Huynh and Jasmine Jones to form the core of experience for this year’s team.

“We’ve looked good so far this year and have some fast swimmers who are familiar with the water. I think our relays are going to be pretty good,” assistant coach David Gourley said. “Right now we’re just working on getting the yards in, so we can improve on speed as the season goes on.”
Park Hill will also have a strong addition to the mix this year with senior transfer Lauren Shaw, who transferred from Warrensburg. She placed second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 freestyle at the state swim meet last season.

“She is looking to end her high school career as an individual state champion,” head coach Karl Haley said.

Park Hill will get a good indication of where they stand compared to the competition on January 5th when they host the Park Hill Invite which will feature 23 local teams. Attempting to repeat at conference against Lee’s Summit West will have an added obstacle with the addition of Park Hill South to the field, but that won’t change the Trojans’ goal of improving on an individual level to give them a shot at going back-to-back.

Park Hill upsets Lee's Summit West for conference title, but DQ creates tie

Going into last weekend’s Suburban Conference Red Division girls swim meet, the Park Hill Trojans had a steep task in front of them. Upsetting Lee’s Summit West who has never lost a conference meet since the school’s opening in 2004 and placing higher than their rankings in individual events would take a special performance across the board.

“It’s been four years since we won our last title,” Park Hill coach Karl Haley said. “Going into the meet, LSW had never lost a conference meet. We really wanted to end that streak.”

Things fell into place throughout the day with stellar finishes from swimmers in all events. Trojans swimmers took first in seven events including the 200 free and medley relays, Madison Heydinger in the 50 and 200 free, Brynn Guardado in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM, and Abigail Hill in the 100 breast stroke. Going into the final event, the 400 free relay, Park Hill was up an impressive 40 team points going into one of their stronger events. But a technicality would slightly alter what at the time was the Trojans’ for the taking.

“We got disqualified because of the ‘jewelry rule’. Girls have hair ties all the time and as long as it’s under their cap its usually fine, but one girl left it on her wrist,” Haley explained. “It’s fairly rare, they usually give them the benefit of the doubt and if the official sees it they’ll tell them to take it off. It was one of those things where she was the last one on the relay and no one was paying attention until it was too late.”

So while Park Hill finished first in the relay which would have given them an 80 point advantage at the end of the meet, their first place points were awarded to Lee’s Summit West, the second place finisher. This gave the Titans 40 points, bringing them even with the Trojans at 544 team points apiece. Good enough for a tie and making both teams rare co-conference champions.

“It’s too bad it was one of those things that ended up making a difference in the ending. I think the rule is mostly geared towards contact sports,” Haley said. “It’s one of those things you never hear about (co-champs). You see ties in events, but usually never overall as champions.”

Nonetheless, while Park Hill did not end Lee’s Summit West’s streak, they can now claim a conference title in girls swimming, something they would not have done if they lived up to the seeds they were set in to start the meet.

“Going into the meet, if we were to finish in the place we were seeded, we wouldn’t have won,” Haley said. “It was definitely the best meet of the year. Everyone had their best times of the year and did outstanding things.”

Brynn Guardado and Madison Heydinger will be the only Trojans competing in individual events at the state meet next weekend, but while Haley says they led the team this year and were the ‘go-to’ girls, it was a supporting cast that made the title possible who were just short of qualifying for state. They included Lynn Huynh who finished second in the 200 freestyle, Lindsey Horstmann who finished second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle, and Jasmine Jones who finished second in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. A complete team effort.

“It’s hard to point out one event,” Haley said. “I can look to every event and point out one or multiple swimmers who proved so much and made a huge difference in the point swing for us."

Young Trojan swimmers aim to get experience

The Park Hill girls swim team comes into the 2011-2012 season with a mostly untested group of swimmers after a 24th place finish at the state tournament in 2010-2011. Leading them are five seniors, headlined by two-time all-state swimmer Brynn Guardado who finished fifth in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle at state last year. Coach Karl Haley believes it will be another great season for Guardado and hopes it includes putting her name at the top of the wall lining the hall of swimming accomplishments at the Park Hill District Aquatic Center.

“She is looking to continue that along with setting a few new school records along the way,” Haley said.

Guardado will be joined by seniors Eleanor Parrott, Jordan Rowlett, Amanda Panich, and Lindsey Horstman. Junior Abigail Hill and sophomore Jasmine Jones also return after state qualifying seasons last year. Haley says the main thing for the Trojans this season is getting some of the more inexperienced swimmers exposed to the level of swimming they’ll face on the high school level.
“We have a fairly young team without a lot of experience in competition. So the key is getting them on board and teaching them how to compete,” Haley said.

Even with a young team, Park Hill still has their sights set on a conference title which they fell short of last year with a second place finish. In their way is a talented Lee’s Summit West program who hasn’t lost a suburban conference championship meet since the school opened in 2004.

“We would like to compete for a team conference championship. Lee’s Summit West has never lost a girls conference meet. They graduated a lot of talent last year, but they would still be the front runner,” Haley said.

Other swimmers looking to contribute this year include juniors Sarah Thompson and Madeline Hemphill along with sophomores Lynn Huynh, Braidey Howe, and Shannon Barry.

After weather caused the North Kansas City tournament to be moved back several days, the Lady Panthers of Park Hill South experienced a rough series of games last week as they went 0-3 in three consecutive days. A 59-43 loss to St. Joe Central in the opening round led to a rivalry matchup with Park Hill on Friday afternoon. The close matchups over the last two years between the two teams held true again as the game heading into overtime before Park Hill edged out a 53-50 win. Stephanie Griffith put in 12 points for the Panthers. Hoping to bounce back on Saturday, the Panthers lost another close one. This time to Oak Park 26-24. Park Hill South is now 7-12 with a home game against Kearney Thursday evening.

Winter Weekly Recap: Jan. 3-8

Park Hill Boys Basketball
The Park Hill boys added two victories to their total last week to improve to 9-3. The two Suburban Middle Six victories against North Kansas City and St. Joe Central make the Trojans 3-0 as they head into an important three week stretch featuring a heavy conference schedule and the Basehor Linwood Tournament. En route to an 85-73 victory early in the week against North Kansas City, the two teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 66 before earning the final margin in a 19-7 final period for the Trojans. Chris Nsenki scored 31 along with Anthony Walter's 17, De'Aris Flint's 13, and Connor Farmer's 10 points. Park Hill was firing on all cyclinders Friday night against St. Joe Central as Coach David Garrison said it was one of the best performances his team has turned out all year as they defeated the Indians 77-60. The Trojans got out to a 36-22 halftime score before eventually extending it to as much as 22 in the third. Nsenki led in scoring again with 21 points along with Walter's 19 and Flint's 18. Park Hill benefitted from a tough defense that defended the paint fairly aggressively.

"It was really two things, our perimeter defense did real well at keeping the ball out of the paint, but then when it did get to the point we were working our tail off defending it," Garrison said.

With the loss of senior Brady Kreitzer for the season, Garrison says there are two players that he'll look to fill the void with Connor Farmer and Tre Durham.

"Between those two guys, just depending on the kind of matchups looks like, they'll be the guys that need to step in and play," Garrison said. "He's (Farmer) gonna sit on the block for us, he's going to rebound and score at the basket while Tre's a ball handle and will play the point for us, which takes pressure off Anthony (Walters), so he can score for us more."

With anywhere from 7-9 players that could start for the Trojans, depth has not been a problem. Garrison tries to use his players in situations that allow them to be most effective.

"It's a chess match, sometimes we try combinations that don't work, but other times its great. One thing we know with the people we have here, they're going to battle and not take any plays off," he said.

Park Hill Girls Basketball
After a 40-12 win over Liberty North earlier in the week, the Lady Trojans hoped to gain their first conference win against Truman last Friday night. A 23-11 halftime deficit put the Trojans behind in the first half, but they closed the margin in the third to narrow the lead to just 32-25. After playing a man defense in the first half, the second half was when Truman threw a zone at Park Hill. Although reacting to the defense and running their sets fairly under control, they weren't able to penetrate the basket enough to score as much as they would have liked.

"We didn't have the confidence to step up and make a shot," coach Aaron Neeser said. "We gave up the same number of buckets, they just got to the line more."

An intense fourth quarter cut the lead to as close as four, but the Patriots pulled away for a 42-30 victory. The Trojans are now 5-5 with a game against Lee's Summit West Thursday evening.

"I think what I'm most satisfied about is that they really care about each other. Usually when you have a new coach, you have a transition period where you struggle a little bit, but they're really buying into what we're doing. I like how hard we compete, we just have to get better at the little things," Neeser said.

Park Hill South Girls Basketball
The Lady Panthers improved to 4-6 on the season with a win on Thursday night against Belton 56-44. South outscored Belton in three of the four quarters before widening the margin with an 18-10 final quarter. They'll travel to Fort Osage on Friday night.

Park Hill South Boys Basketball
The Park Hill South Panthers hit a rough patch this week with two tough opponents in the likes of Liberty and Raytown who both dealt them close losses. The Wednesday night effort at Liberty left the Panthers with a 65-60 defeat. Traveling to Raytown on Friday evening, the Panthers found themselves with a 10-point fourth quarter deficit, but battled back before falling 66-63. Christian Hildebrandt led in scoring with 20 points along with Adam Schemenauer's 19. South is now 8-5 with a home game against Belton to conclude the week on Friday night.

Park Hill and Park Hill South Swim/Dive
Park Hill South ran away with their own invitational this past weekend at the Park Hill Aquatic Center as they racked up 298 points in the 15 team field of competition. Park Hill finished fifth with 105 points.

Top performers for the Panthers were first place finishes from the 200 yard medley relay team of Lyndsay Ryan, Rachael Norfleet, Mary Cate Reinert, and Mariah Bryant, Bryant in the 50 yard free, Hannah Bortnick in the one meter dive, the 200 yard free relay team of Shannon Brouk, Olivia McLain, Miranda Henderson, and Bryant. South will attend the Center Invitational over the weekend.

Top performances from Park Hill came from Brynn Guardado with first place in the 200 yard free and third in the 100 yard free, and Eleanor Parrott with third in the one meter dive. Park Hill has a meet at Raytown Wednesday evening and another next week at St. Joe Central.

Preview: Park Hill Girls Swimming looks to overcome last year's second place conference finish

After coming in as runners-up at last year’s conference swim and dive meet, the Park Hill girls team will be swimming against a new set of competitors at this year’s meet as conference realignment puts the Trojans up against North Kansas City, St. Joe Central, Ruskin, Lee’s Summit West, and Truman. Although their conference will change, their regular season schedule will feature many of the same familiar opponents and coming off an 11-2 dual meet record from last year puts Park Hill in position to have another successful season.

Relying on a core group of swimmers to lead them, the Trojans will look to junior Brynn Guardado to be their strongest swimmer. Guardado returns as a member of the All-State team in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Joining her will be senior Kaley Hensel and sophomore Abigail Hill in the breaststroke and Jasmine Jones in the butterfly. Returning state qualifying divers include Eleanor Parrott and Jordan Rowlett.

Coach Karl Haley’s team will participate in two big swim invites this season as they compete in the Independence Invitational in mid-December and then they come home to host their annual Park Hill Invitational at the beginning of January. In terms of overcoming their second place finish from last year, the team that appears to most likely sit in the Trojans way of a conference title is Lee’s Summit West who returns a strong squad from last year. Haley believes they will give them a strong run for it though if his team puts the work in.

In addition to competing for a conference championship, the team will once again try to qualifier as many swimmers and divers as possible for the state meet in mid-February.

Trojans Swim & Dive team looks to constant improvement as key

After winning their conference the two previous years, it was dissatisfying for the Park Hill Girls Swim and Dive team to come up short by finishing second in last year’s conference meet. But that leaves all the motivation in the world for Karl Haley’s team coming into this year.

Haley tries to focus his team on the importance of two meets all season: conference and state, where they finished 24th last year.

“We point all of our training towards two meets,” Haley said. “All the other meets are tests that occur along the way.”

They want those meets to be their best performances. In fact, last year each member of the team accomplished not only their best individual showings of the season in those meets, but also in their careers. The Trojans strive for that kind of constant improvement in order to get the kind of results they want when they matter most.

“We expect the same this year,” Haley said of his team’s approach.

Like all competitors, Haley says it’s about who can work harder and smarter than their opponents. With another successful swim program not too far away in rival Park Hill South, it’s an easy motivator for members of the team. Battling a rival for that top spot year after year makes it mean just that much more.

Park Hill will return several proven members of their team from last season. Brynn Guardado and Kori Wagner were a part of the team to set the school record in the 200 medley relay last year. Both were named all-state honorable mention. Guardado in the 200 free, 500 free, 200 medley, and 400 free relay events. Wagner in the 200 medley relay event. Kaley Hensel was also honored as an all-state honorable mention for her performances in the 100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. On the diving side, Eleanor Parrott returns after being a state qualifier. Erin Flagler, Halle Musfeldt, Molly Pennington, Hannah Pennington, Hannah Rank, Hannah Reichert, and Erin Barry round out the rest of the team as returning lettermen.

The Trojans’ big meets of the year will be their own Park Hill Invitational in early January followed by the KC Classic later in the month.
